Con la economía de escusa y una venta fallida como detonante, el próximo 15 de febrero de 2009, Lycos va a cerrar los servicios que no le son rentables (1 y 2), lo que se traduce en el alojamiento de correo electrónico de Lycos Mail y el servicio de alojamiento web gratuito de Tripod. Todas las cuentas y sus datos serán eliminados de sus sistemas, por lo que a partir de ese día todo lo que no hayas guardado en una copia de respaldo se perderá.
En ambos casos hablamos de ramas de Lycos Europe, empresa perteneciente a Telefónica. El alojamiento gratuito de Tripod se ha quedado anclado en el pasado ofreciendo unos miserables 20MB y estrictas medidas de seguridad con respecto a los scripts, pero no por ello dejará de ser uno de los pioneros junto a Geocities; mientras tanto, Lycos Mail fue renovado en 2006 y sus características están a la altura de GMail, Yahoo o Live Hotmail, además de no incrustar publicidad. El problema está en que en ambos casos, el patente abandono de los usuarios y una época en que las empresas recortan gastos, ambos pasan a desaparecen definitivamente.
Esto es parte del correo electrónico que han recibido los usuarios de Tripod:
After this date it will be ímpossible to view your Homepage in the internet or to do a Backup using FTP from your page because the content will be unrecoverably deleted ... We regret having to take this step and we want to thank you for your confidence in the past. Currently, we are still working on finding a solution to provide you the service through another provider. If we should succeed in doing so, we will inform you within the next 4 weeks. But as this is currently doubtful, we would like to ask you to assume the end of the service.
Y este otro del mandado a los de Lycos Mail con idénticas consecuencias:
We regret to inform you that our parent company has decided to discontinue all unprofitable activities. One of the activities that will be discontinued is our E-mail business division. For this reason, we are hereby terminating your account as of 15 February 2009. Currently, we are still working on finding a solution to provide you the service through another provider. If we should succeed to do so, we will inform you within the next 4 weeks. But as this is currently doubtful, we would like to ask you to assume the end of the service. Prior to this date, you may continue to log in to your e-mail account and receive and send mail as usual. After this date, however, we will close your account and delete all content and access authorizations stored with Lycos in relation to your e-mail account, in accordance with legal requirements. You will then no longer be able to receive or send e-mail under your e-mail address. The contents of your mailbox will also no longer be accessible. For this reason, we ask that you back up all important data from your Lycos e-mail account in the next few days and switch to another e-mail provider. Should you still be entitled to services for any additional paid options, we will of course reimburse the balance to the bank account you provided. We regret this measure and would like to thank you for the trust you have placed in us.
Tanto en el caso del servicio de alojamiento de páginas web como el de correo electrónico se afirma que desde Lycos Europe están buscando algún tipo de acuerdo o colaboración para que sus usuarios no pierdan los datos ni el servicio; pero a falta de menos de un mes para el cierre, el mejor consejo si usas alguno de estos servicios es que no tardes en realizar un copia de respaldo. En el caso del alojamiento solo necesitas acceder mediante FTP, y para el correo electrónico puedes descargarlo a cualquier aplicación de escritorio o webmail con soporte para POP3/IMAP.
